They followed with their debut record, “Remember Roses,” in the summer of 2017 - an effervescent collection of songs that boast a stunning juxtaposition of wistfulness and melancholy, set against an eccentrically offbeat pop backdrop. The record conjures up imagery of pastel skies and carefree summer days; and seeks to find beauty in even the most softly spoken and mundane moments of everyday life.
The lead single from the record, “Wishing Girl” is a perfect example of their seamless collaborative nature; with playful whistles and an upbeat melody, set against a narrative of a failed relationship. As NPR described it; when together, Yael and Gil “mount a charm offensive powerful enough to knock down some pretty sturdy defenses.”
The record was received with critical acclaim, drawing attention from NPR, Paste Magazine, NYLON, Observer, Interview Magazine and more. Once again their music brought them Stateside, seeing the duo tour across the country, playing festivals throughout the summer of 2017. From the slower and almost Lana Del Rey-esque moments of “She’s A Rainbow”, to the gleeful “Stranger”, “Remember Roses” is an expansive record from the duo who admit, they aren’t always looking forward.
“The song, ‘Morning Bells' is about the beginning of Lola Marsh," explains Cohen, "the way both of us struggled to fulfill our dream together while trying to survive the challenging life of being musicians." It's fitting, then, that the track did not emerge in one fell swoop. It began with a beat, and after some time melody and lyrics followed, but Landau and Cohen had difficulties arriving at the right chorus. "We wanted something uplifting and strong, and tried all kinds of different parts before we found the right one," says Cohen.
The song, and the overall sound of the record, expresses the trust, nervousness, and excitement that's tied up in being creatively open without reserve - much like that first fateful rendition of “Jolene” that brought the duo together at a house party in Tel Aviv. Lola Marsh’s debut record, “Remember Roses” is available now via Verve (Universal) / Barclay.
